To support the incremental improvement of homes and to encourage the creation of gardens the iSLP runs an Homes and Gardens Competition each quarter. The competition is advertised on posters in public places and in the quarterly iSLP newspaper (see Communication). Residents within the iSLP can enter the competition by writing their name and address and what improvements they have made on a simple entry form. Entry forms and entry boxes have been placed at community halls and libraries within the project.

After the closing date of each competition the forms are collected by members of the iSLP Project Coordinator's team. Each applicant's property is then visited, and a photograph taken of the improvements. Judging is then done on the basis of the photographs by a panel of judges that includes officials and some of the donors of prizes.

Prizes are donated by building materials suppliers, gardening suppliers and by builders involved in the project who make small cash prizes available. The competition provides a good advertising opportunity to the donors, as prize-givings are public functions and are reported upon in the iSLP newspaper.

These competitions were not automatically popular with beneficiaries. To most of them the concept was completely novel. Some thought that it was like a lottery, and put in as many entries as they could write in the hope that it would increase their chance of wining a prize! Illiteracy may also play a role in the matter of completing forms. However, after consulting community leadership, and inviting community personalities to prize-givings, the numbers of applicants have increased significantly. Enthusiasm amongst the donors continues to grow.
